YCH Services for Young People is selected to deliver one of the UK’s first NHS Cadet programmes

23 January 2021

YCH Services for Young People (YCH SfYP) was delighted to be selected as the delivery team for the innovative NHS Cadet pilot programme that launched in Hertfordshire in October 2020.

NHS Cadets

The NHS Cadets programme launch was preceded by an online summer programme that ran from 1st July – 31st August 2020 and attracted over 80 young people aged 14-16. Between them they attended 40 sessions across the summer, including sessions on mental health and emotional wellbeing.

One young person who attended the summer programme said:

“I am an aspiring medic and I know that the medical path is a tough one and a lot of people suffer from burnout. This programme I know will be so beneficial for me in terms of giving myself time to reflect on my life and different situations and come out of it feeling better about the situation and about myself.”

The NHS Cadet programme pilot launched in October 2020, with many of the summer cadets signing up to continue their journey.

The programme, run nationally by St John Ambulance and the NHS, is delivered across three terms and offers a great opportunity for students in School Years 10-11. It aims to support students’ access to meaningful volunteering experiences in a healthcare environment while undertaking relevant training and development opportunities.

The NHS understands there can be many barriers for younger teens who want to volunteer within health care, including their age, and that by the time they are old enough to do so, their interests may have changed.

The NHS is one of the biggest employers in the world, with over 350 career choices. Whether a young person is interested in cooking, engineering, business management or accountancy, there will be an important and vital role for them within the NHS.

YCH SfYP is currently running six groups (online), delivered by each of its five area teams, with a weekly attendance of around 75 young people.

This is an exciting programme that offers enormous opportunity for young people and provides a great pathway into a range of exciting careers.

Codelivery by our IAG and Youth Work teams ensures that cadets get the best possible support.
